Not what it says on the tin... - By: D. Gerrelli, 06 Dec 2008
Although this book is no doubt an invaluable resource I believe the synopsis by the author is misleading. This is not a book for complete beginners. It makes the assumption you are familiar with each of the devices within reason & refers to controls without explaining where they are. It instructs you to perform actions without explaining how to actually go about doing it. It makes the assumption you are familair with musical terms such as bars & reverbs without explaining what they mean. Although I have been able to complete the first workshop it's taken me hours to get it right & has been a real struggle. I've had to resort to seaking alternative 'true' beginners material & then will come back to this book. It means I've paid for a book I currently cannot make use of without hours of banging my head against the desk. I work with computers so the problem is not operating the application, it's understanding the musical terms used & where various controls within the devices are. For example, it says alter the Filter Frequency but doesn't tell me where that is. I would suggest starting with an idiots guide before moving to this book, it should be marketed at intermediate users not beginners.
Great book, wrong product details - By: N. Rafael, 17 Oct 2006
Be aware this book is -not- 480 pages as described on product details but 122 pages for real.
The book content's is top. The only downside could be the amount of excessive big pictures. But then it makes it more easy to follow the exercises. It is highly recomendable if you are, or want to be, into electronic music.
Excellent Book - By: Ian McC, 29 Sep 2006
Hollin Jones' other book, Tips & Tricks with Reason, is great for explainingin detail the function of all of the devices & components within Reason.
This takes it further by building up a series of music projectsin different styles to actucally produce completed tracks. The downloadable project files & Refills are also great.
Highly recommended for all wishing to learn Reason
Excellent help for learning music techniques - By: Doug, 17 Aug 2006
Following on from Hollin Jones' excellent Tips & Tricks book for Reason, comes this book which offers Reason users easy-to-follow tutorials to build up songsin the style of 8 different genres (Hip hop, Drum 'N' Bass, Dub, House, Techno, Trip Hop, Trance & Electropop). It is certainly ideal for Reason novices (like me) & intermediates, although I would imagine that those with higher levels of expertisein Reason might know many of the techniques described herein the book.
Still there are clear stages to follow through & screenshots of what should be happening on your computer to help.
The only quibble I would have is that no cover CD is included with the book. All of Hollin Jones' tutorial steps & about 60 per cent of the suggested samples (mainly for Dr Rex & the NN-XT sampler) can be downloaded from PC Publishing's own website, but although this is fairly quick to do on an average broadband connection (about 15 minutesin total for everything), nonetheless it might annoy some people without easy access to internet downloading (although I'd imaginein this rare case that you'd probably be able to strike some sort of deal with PC Publishing downloading it for you & sending a CD by post).
Allin all, it is an excellent book & adds to Hollin Jones' reputation as a fine Reason tutor.
