Outtakes from Good Guys Wear Black - By: , 21 Oct 2000
After having read Steve Collins' autobiographical account "Good Guys Wear Black," I was eager to read more of his account of his time with the Metropolitan Police's SO-19 tactical firearms unit. As an American military historian, I was interestedin the firearms capabilities of British police, as well as a comparison of SO-19's tactics with those of British special forces. Both of Collins' books do not disappointin this regard. The Glory Boys,in particular, devotes more time to the firearms expertise at all levels within "the Met." Collins even devotes his epilogue to the controversy over whether all Met police should be armed. Collins also devotes some time to SO-19 rivalry & cooperation with "the Regiment." If the book fails at any level it isin its organization. Most chapters are separate accounts of SO-19 operations. Some are operations Collins' participated in, & seem to carry on the story from his first book. However, some are stories that Collins heard from others, or were apparently common knowledge amongst SO-19 members. The chronology of all of these stories is a bit fuzzy, & perhaps that is on purpose to assuage security concerns. To me, two sections stood out. The first is an account of SO-19 operationsin the Carribean, which can be very page-turning. The second is an account of Collins' "ride-along" with the Sacramento (California) Police SWAT team. He did this during a vacation to the U.S. Being the son of a police officer myself, I can attest that this is the sort of thing that any cop would do on a vacation!
Excellent, a totally gripping read from start to finish. - By: , 18 Nov 1999
I have now read both of Steve Collins books, & from start to finish was totally gripped, I never wanted to put it down.

Steve wrote the bookin such a way that you felt part of his caracter, everything was explain & you sometimes felt the adrelain rush that he was feeling.

I was always pleased when he nabbed the bad guys, please but a little sad when one of the bad guys got shot.

He explain the pressures but the the rewards from doing such a dangerous job, & my repect for the Police was strengthen by both of these book.

Please, please write some more.

What A Book! A Real Insight, The REAL Armed Police. - By: , 03 Aug 1999
After reading Steve Collins's book, I had to get his previously written book, "The Good Guys Wear Black", both of these books follow an SO19 Sergeant through his career through the Metropolitan Police Special Firearms Wing, this is a real eyeopener, forget the, "Bill" this is real, interesting & exciting, want a good book on factual material, this is it.
A different side of London's Metropolitan Police - By: , 23 Jul 1999
Continuing from his previous book, Steve Collins takes the reader into the seldom seen & publised world of SO19, London's Swat team.In a straight forward way, he tells what it's like to take on some of the hardest criminalsin the UK.From shootouts to hostage rescues, he tells it from a personal perspective of someone who's there. An excellent book for those who are interestedin police work & a must read for those who think that gunfights & violent crimes only happenin the US & Hollywood, wake up! It's real & it happens every day. Totally different from the traditional Bobby image we are familiar with.
