Strongly recommended - By: Mrs. Jane Willing, 20 Dec 2008
This beautifully compiled anthology definitely solves the Christmas present dilemma, as well as for many other occasions. Impossible not to be inspired, touched, amused, interested. We need to be reminded of these heroes more than ever.
Inspiring, uplifting - a must-read - By: John B. Leith, 30 Nov 2008
The need for heroes (male & female) seems to be an inextinguishable feature of human nature. Famous footballers, musicians, rock stars, TV presenters, even gangsters are likely to become the object of some kind of hero-worship. But most of them turn out to have feet of clay. So what better than Deborah Cassidi's anthology of heroes & holy men to point usin more wholesome, more noble directions?
I have to declare an interest here. I am one of the contributors to this anthology (my holy man is 'Abdu'l-Baha, one of the central figures of the Baha'i faith). However, I hasten to add that have no financial interestin the volume.
When I wrote my contribution I had no idea what the rest of the anthology would be like, but when I received my copy I was impressed by the quality of the book & of the other contributions - not to mention the variety of heroes & holy men who inspire the contributors.
This is undoubtedly a book to dip into for inspiration & reflection & would make a good gift for friends & family.
An ideal present - By: N. D. Barnes, 15 Nov 2008
This is a lovely little book which you will want to own yourself & give as a present at Christmas - or indeed at any time. It is an anthology of short pieces selected by a very wide variety of people from all walks of life, some well known & some not, & written or spoken by their favourite 'heroes & holy people'. It equally rewards random browsing or serious reading; it is impossible not to be intrigued, instructed & often inspired & also to want to know more about these great figures who have achieved heroic stature & span the full range of history, geography & culture.
A captivating compilation, beautifully composed. - By: M. Tricker, 15 Nov 2008
Having thoroughly enjoyed the delights of the previous two Anthologies, this third outing is the most compelling yet. A diverse list of truly inspiring heroes, heroines, holy & ordinary people have been chosen with personal & often moving accounts form the contributors. A remarkable collection that achieves the paradoxical feat of being both hard to put down yet also easy to dipin & out of!! All profits go to a children's charity too. Awesome.
