I bought this after reading the brilliant A Paramedic's Diary: Life & Death on the Streets by London paramedic Stuart Gray. I thought it would be interesting to get a woman's view of the job.
Unfortunately it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know & Stuart Gray tells it better.
There were some good anecdotes - one that sticksin my mind is about a woman whose husband has attacked her with an axe. Lysa Walder asks her if he regularly abuses her & she tells the paramedic that he is a lovely, gentle man. Obviously that is hard to believe judging by the woman's injuries, & it is not until months later that Lysa finds out that the man had an undiagnosed brain tumour & the violence was the first manifestation of it. He had died a short time later.
I'm sure that if I had read 999 first I would have liked it more - it is a quick & easy to read book, but it could do with some editing & does not offer the level of insight that Stuart Gray's book gave me.

A truely inspirational book. It gives you a window into the world of pre-hospital care & the highs & lows that it involves. You follow Lysa through the turmoil & the joys of busy events such as New Year but also every day jobs that others would just overlook. It has reinforced my ambitions of becoming a paramedic!
wow what a fantastic read - By: M. Willis, 11 Oct 2008
What a fantastic book, I just couldn't put it down, its so hard to imagine that a paramedic has so much to put up with, but also the enjoyment & satisfaction they get from their job,Lysa sounds like a fun, warm person that I would be very honoured if I or any of my family or friends needed a paramedic & Lysa was to turn up on the scene, I reccomend this book to anybody & everybody who ever wondered what every day life is like for a paramedic.Cant wait till the next book comes out.

Gripping - By: S. phillips, 28 Sep 2008
A well written book, which offers an insight into the diverse working life of one of our emergency services. I thought this book was really gripping. The author shows a genuine passion for her work. This is the best book of its kind that I have read. Well worth buying.
A terrific Insight - By: Debbie Hutchings, 08 Sep 2008
My husband heard this book mentioned on the radio & told me about it, knowing that I like biographies & because it had local interest. Having taken '999' on holiday, I finished it within two days unable to put it down. I was quickly gripped by the easy-to-read short stories which give real insight to the work of a female London Paramedic.
The book is written with equal measures of humour, humility & compassion. I laughed & I cried, amazed & awestruck by the kind of things paramedics deal with. How lucky we are, particularlyin London, to have people like Lysa who genuinely care about the incredibly difficult job they do & the lives they touch.
