Colbert Continues to Command - By: Graceann Macleod, 19 Aug 2008
As long as Stephen Colbert has been performing, he's been writing. This is a brilliant manin full command of a comedic sensibility that has been delighting me for many years. When I discovered that a book would be released writtenin the tone of the right-wing blow-hard character that he has created for The Colbert Report, I was thrilled. When I finally got my hands on a copy (not easy to do at first, since I livein the UK), I was not disappointedin the least.
Colbert loses none of the bombastic style of his alter ego, & the observations made are riotously funny. The section where he describes all one needs to know to have a college education is perfection. I also loved his chapter on the dominance over animals (love to Gipper!)
I have heard from many, many people that Stephen Colbert,in real life, is a mild-mannered, kind man who is polite & decent. To read the rants of the egomaniacal jerk he's created to lampoon the screaming heads on television (whoever yells the loudest wins, apparently) is a bit surreal, but never unsatisfying.
I look eagerly forward to more from Stephen Colbert,in whatever media he uses to share it. No matter how I get to experience his humor, I know I'll bein for a treat.
Please Rise For The Singing Of The Colbert National Anthem - By: Steven Stewart, 08 Aug 2008
I have only recently become a fan of Stephen Colbert after accidentally coming across the Colbert Report (pronounced "Repore") by him anyway. From that very first accidental episode, I fellin love with his work & his satirical representation of the typical American & their look on life. That episode happened to advertise this book, & I bought it to see if the satirical personality of Colbert could come across just as well on paper. I needn't have worried as the right wing Republican character of Colbert came off, at times, better than his TV personality.
In this book, which he openly admits he didn't write but dictated himself, he gives us his honest & at times controversial opinions on a number of aspects of life.

They are the truth, the Stephen Colbert truth. The only better truth is the word of God so you better accept the second best truth of Colbert. "Racism no longer existsin America" one of Colbert's many truths, if you can't handle it, then you better go live somewhere else.
All joking aside, if you're a serious reader, then this book isn't for you. It has to be read one small part at a time as if you do read for any real length of time, then the text will become predictable. If you read it as if you're watching the Report (remember the T is silent) I found it came across much funnier than if you were just reading as you would any other book. That being said, it's still an awesome read & is something that can only really be appreciated by fans of the show.
Funny and Clever; plus it has stickers and a bookmark! - By: Norma Lehmeierhartie, 15 Apr 2008
Stephen Colbert was hilarious at the breakfast talk at BEAin June this year & I couldn't wait to read his book.
14 writers wrote this book. It is good, but I gave it only 4 stars because at times it was a bit predictable. (Too many brains & hands creating it?)
This is not a book to bring on as solo reading for a long plane ride. It is writtenin sound bites & a long read would get quite boring. Instead, it is a book meant to be read a page or two at a time. This way, the humor & cleverness can be appreciated, the side comments (in red) savored.
Honestly, this book belongsin your bathroom! My copy will go there & I will enjoy it over a long period of time. A page or two of extremely tight & clever sound bites & I have my "shot" of great humor for the day.
Finally, the seal on the book really threw me. How could Colbert have managed an award for first edition? Well, the award is an "inside" job & he's kind enough to include a page of them to decorate other booksin your library! Hilarious & absolutely original!

Outrageous, very funny, and outrageous. In that order. - By: AquaViola, 29 Mar 2008
The Daily Show with John Stewart has proven to be the making of many a good American comedian. One of the greatest of these is Stephen Colbert.
Having left the Daily Showin 2005, & as well as participatingin many films, the actor Stephen Colbert (with the last `t' pronounced) started a television programme called the Colbert Report (pronounced with silent last `t's). In this show, which is available on the Internet & also on a Region 1 DVD, Stephen Colbert plays a Republican - not just any Republican, but someone who is more to the right than the current president. He frequently asks guests of any political persuasion "President Bush: a great president, or the greatest president?"
And now his book is arriving on British shores, heaven help us all. A video of him promoting this book is on the Amazon.com (American) website (under "I am America (and so can you)").
This book, which took slightly more time than a 2-day weekend to dictate, is full of Stephen Colbert's Truth. And his Truth is not something that you can check with facts from an encyclopaedia, because very often the Encyclopaedia will be wrong - & I know that, because it doesn't have the same "facts" as Stephen Colbert's Truth. Nor, Stephen Colbert checks his Truth with his heart & with his gut; & his Truth is always right by that measurement.
In this book, Stephen Colbert gives you the Truth that you need to have, helpfully arranged under the following topics:
Introduction (an important section. Also includes instructions on how to read the book; without that, you won't get very farin this book.)
The family
Old people
Animals
Religion
Sports
Sex & dating
Homosexuals
Higher education
Hollywood
The media
Class war
Race
Immigrants
Science
A note to the future
Finally, once you have absorbed all of Stephen Colbert's truth, only then will you be able to read the Appendix, the speech which Stephen Colbert madein front of the President of the United Statesin 2006. The President has not recovered since.
Casual passers-by will flick through the book, & come across phrases such as "racism no longer existsin America", & walk away, open-mouthed. They have just seen Stephen Colbert's truth. Can you handle the Truth?
TV-show in a book - By: Wilgerboom, 29 Mar 2008
This book is fantastic. A great easy read that feels very much like watching TV. The book is really well written. I would have placed the religion chapter elsewhere though, some of my friends were so upset by that chapter that they stopped reading, so if you are a sensitive reader, skip the chapter on religion. The chapter on science is classic.
