I'd give it five, but I don't like the idea of Cassidy... - By: , 22 Sep 2000
being this nasty. I don't actually own this, I collected the series as it went along monthly, so this was all the better having to wait to find what happened next. Garth Ennis is the only person to live up to the long time comicbook phrase "Nothing will ever be the same after this arc". This, I think would be the second post War In the Sun collection, & so far it's been a totally different series, from the OTT sex, violence & language mess it started as to an alomst soap opera stylee. I've also read the end of the series, & all I can say to those who haven't is get set for more heartbreak & betrayalsin the last book Alamo (i almost cried whilst reading the last two issues), which should be out soon.
Hellishly Good - By: , 20 Sep 2000
The latest instalmentin Ennis & Dillon Preacher saga has to be the darkest yet. As ever the art is beautiful & atmospheric, the writing superb. In this volume we see Tulip & Jesse reunited after her mistaken beliefin Jesse's death at Monument valley. In a moment of clarity she leaves the parasitic Cass & travels to her college friendin New York. To her shock & surprise Jesse is also there & a sweaty reunion occurs:) The story then delves into the background of Cass & we find out that maybe he is not as nice a vampire as he first appeared. Alsoin this volume is a flashback special to our favorite couples early days as car thievesin texas. Highly amusing & graphic as ever. Again though Ennis & Dillon cant fail to delight fans with this latest instalment. The plot thickens & a showdown is imminent. Cant wait till the next Part.
Too much (supporting character) background - By: randyofstr@totalise.co.uk, 26 Jun 2000
Well this certainly is Ennis, but you do get the feeling that he's padding out the story line a bit to keep the title going as long as possible. This could back-fire though because if the title continues to procrastinate I may loose intrest. Don't get me wrong, Preacher is the best thing since sliced bread & by far the most entertaining graphic novel I have ever read, its just this latest book leaves me with a hollow, dissatisfied feeling. The background on Cassidy is awesome, we all know people like that but could never do such a good job of describing them & that is essential to furthering the plot. Starr & the Grail- great stuff! (good to see Hoover). Tulips story, the road trip & the Texas Ranger could have gone into a spin-off like Ancient History. I need more story, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN HONDO'S!
Not exactly ground-breaking, but still worth it..... - By: , 11 Jun 2000
This would be something like the 8th preacher graphic novel if you don't count Cassidy's Blood And Whiskey, because that was included in...oohh...Darn, I can't remember which one. But anyway, back to reality. This doesn't really further the plot of Jesse's crusade to find God, it just builds on some characters backgrounds, like Tulip's, for example. We also follow the course of Herr Starr's life after the "accident" in the desert. We also see the return of Starr's henchman, Hoover, who spent an amusing time on the beach with a rock & a fish. Jesse gives a lift to a couple of Starr's old friends Bob & Freddy. This novel isn't a good place to start reading Preacher (start at the start, that's why it's called the start), this part of the Preacher series is more for the completists out there as it has everything a Preacher-fan needs, violence, friendship, romance, violence, swearing, justice, Starr's life, violence, Bob & Freddy, there's actually not as much violence as, say, War In The Sun. I do recommend this to anyone who is unsure of buying it. So go & buy it!
Still coasting, but pretty damn good... - By: spet0479@sable.ox.ac.uk, 25 May 2000
Ennis had better start advancing the plot soon - there's no real progress here, but this is still pretty good. It's largely an excuse to fillin a bit more backstory for a couple of characters, & tie up some loose ends. This one's really for fans & completists, but it's great fun, with some marvellous Starr-isms, a couple of truly spectacular gross-outs, & a bit of heart-warmingly gloopy romance.

Let's get on with the plot now...
