Two good stories, fantastic artistry - By: Larry Ketchersid, 12 Dec 2006
These were originally published as JLA #5-#9.
Unlike the first JLA collection, there are two good story linesin here: the angels, with Zauriel vs. Asmodel with the JLA joining Zauriel; & the Key, using the virtual mind probes on the JLA. Both excellent enemies for the combined might of the JLA.
As I'm reading these, I realize the perils of "collection" stories...there are events that happen to the individualsin their own books that are represented but not explained. For instance,in this one Superman is a being of pure energy, wearing a flouresant blue suit that contains the energy & allows him to use it. Gotta ask my son what's going on to keep up.
Favorite panel: my son & I agree this time: page 7, GL & Flash are playing a GL manufactured Rock'M'Sock'M robots, talking about how scary Batman is & the changesin Superman. These two always provide the humor. Butin a different tone, on page 30 & 31, Flash ends up giving advice & counsel to Superman, on being who he is...then he jets back to being Flash.
Also like the entrance of the young Green Arrow.
On to #3!
Very good but fell a bit short of expectations - By: Dean Joseph Simons, 23 Oct 2004
I have recently become a fan of DC comics due to my own curiosity to vary my selection of what comics i read, as i have been a fan of marvel for about a decade.
JLA is a good series, i give it that as i was wowwed by the first volume of the series, "a new dawn", this is the second volume which sees the JLA decide to increase its roster & facing many threatsin the process. After reading the first volume i was desperate to read this one, & i admit i expected the same level of storytelling & suspence that the first one had, however this one missed it. I found myself confused by some events & disappointed with the first story of this graphic novel, the second story was better & improved my feelings of disappointment, stopping me from giving this any less than 3 stars.
Good enough, but other comics provoke more "wow!" factor. - By: , 24 Feb 2001
I've recently come back to superhero comics after more than a decade away, & I picked this book up to see what the DC stalwarts are up to these days. The line-up here is Superman (currently a blue-tinged energy being due to "still-mysterious events"), Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter & Aquaman. The connecting thread through these 5 issues is their search for new recruits; the main stories are an incursion of hostile angels & a plot by deranged villain The Key to control the universe (as you do). The stories are good enough, & the artwork's fine. There are also some genuinely funny, impressive & character-revealing moments (like Flash rearranging a room without appearing to move). I've never seen Wonder Womanin a comic before, & she's painted as a very strong character here. Superman's powers are obviously quite different now, which led to occasional confusion about what he was doing. Unfortunately, I've spoiled myself by reading The Authority, Stormwatch & Planetary, & this is a bit lacklustrein comparison. Most DC stuff has always seemed a bit shallow & twee to me - this is probably better than it used to be, but still suffers. One big problem is that the characters aren't sufficiently different from each other - half of them seem to have "strong, tough & fast" as their main powers, which doesn't give them the best opportunity to shinein distinct areas. So, an enjoyable read but not one that haunts you afterwards.
