Excellent but not for everyone - By: Grand Dizer, 06 Sep 2007
Simply put, this is a thoroughly researched & excellently written look into the IDEA of crusading. The author delves into the motivations behind the launch of the first crusade, the motivations of the participants & the social & intellectual footprint that the first crusade left.
It should be obvious therefore that this isn't a book for a new comer to crusading history. It will not tell you the story of the crusades; rather it is examining a specific (and massively interesting) aspect of the first crusade. If you know the basic events of the first crusade & want to know the social effects & what contemporaries were thinking etc then this book is for you. Newcomers should put this one on hold & read something like Asbridge's The First Crusade or Runciman's trilogy. Enjoy!
