entertaining - By: DanT, 14 Sep 2008
Drizzt the dark eif, trained to kill, very efficiently, but holding to a set of values that do not fit into the society that he was born into.
a society where the way to the top is through the complete destruction of those above you, as long as it is done so thoroughly that there is no one left to point the finger.
Families run by fanatical sorceress priestesses all out to gain the favour of theur spider deity.
All is setin underground cities where the dark elves rule almost supreme.
Drizzt not able to come to terms with drow [name for dark elves] way of life leaves. having to contend with monsters, a vengeful mother, & no clear sense of what he is looking for, or how to get it. And so the adventures begin.
This is not a deep complicated fantasy & some of it is even a little simplistic, but what it really is, is entertaining. so if you are not lookin for a major epic on a grand scale but want a good fantasy read go & get it.
I like being entertained by the books i read so i have just ordered the second omnibus.
The best - By: A. Nilsson, 25 Jun 2008
Perhaps the best book I have ever read. I laughed, cried & thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are brilliant & the descriptive language makes you feel that you are there with them. Drizzt is so cool! :-)
can i do more than 5?! - By: book child, 22 May 2008
Astounding. A wonderfly gripping read. I am by no means new to fantasy,in fact its my passion, but this series came as a shocker! Slightly grim & delishiously malicious, its encaptivating. The story is slightly confusing at the beggining, as you are plungedin with no time to get used to your new surroundings. Thats just about the only fault i can find. The main character is wrapped upin the story from the very beging. Narrowly avoiding being sacrificed at birth, Drizzit finds himself the only beingin his underground world with a conscious. As he slowly climbs to the topin weaponry most keep their opinions to themself. . . but his oddity has by no means gone un-noticed. After reading all his books i still agree this & the next trilogy are the best. after it dwindles & losses the plot a bit, but dont let it stop you from reading these!! you will not regret it.
Shocking - By: Dissenter, 28 Feb 2008
I'd never read any Forgotten Realms books before, so was eagerly anticipating my first foray after reading the reviews of this trilogy. I went & bought the trilogy, rather than a single book, as the reviews were so positive, that they surely must be masterful books, & I couldn't go wrong with them.

How wrong could I be? These books are just awful. Are they actually aimed at adults? Maybe if they are aimed at young adolescents, then they could be excused, but I can't see any reference to that market segment, so I'm assuming that they are actually aimed at adults.

The idea for the story is interesting, but that's as much praise as I can share. The character & setting should provide a fresh angle for fantasy novels, but the writing is just truly awful. The use of language is basic, the dialogue is ridiculous, & the adherence to Dungeons & Dragons rules for magic & canon is farcical. ALl the levitating & casting globes of darkness is cringeworthy. The dark elves going to the 'gym' to train? Come on!? Were the books based around a game of Dungeons & Dragons that the author played with his friends?

I won't be going near another Forgotten Realms book, especially as this author is held up as the 'main man' & shining light of these series. I can only assume that there's a loyal & captive audience for these books, maybe showing extreme brand loyalty. There's no other reason anyone should touch this stuff.

Steer well clear. This is fantasy for children.
If you want real fantasy try Michael Scott Rohan's 'Winter of the World' trilogy.
Got Me Addicted!! - By: Adam Jp Birch, 11 Sep 2007
I've never been one of those book reading types but when I stumbled upon the dark elf trilogy & the legend of Drizzt series I instantly fellin love. From the beginning of the book to the end I was engrossed. A touching story of a young dark elf growing upin the hate filled world of the evil Drow. Drizzt with compassion has to betray his race & even his family to follow his heart, full of action, adventure, pain & happiness Drizzt's life is full of excitement. You can not help but feel for Drizzt, feeling saddened even angry when he is & smiling when something well deserved & good happens to him. From the beginning you know there is something amazing about this character. I highly recommend this book to everyone not just people who are into fantasy books but to everyone else as well. To everyone who is into fantasy book's this is a must read. I've brought the icewind dale trilogy & I will read Drizzt's story all the way through. I can now honestly say because of R.A Salvatore's creation's & brilliant style of writing that I am a full blown book worm!!
