If only - By: titch, 16 Nov 2007
If only the could transend the story & action from this excellent book into the upcoming wolverine film then they would have a sure fire blockbuster on there hands, the story is excellent & wolverine is back to his best.
Great Story - By: Klaus, 02 Jun 2007
One of the best Wolverine stories i have read since Origin. Mark Millar's fantactic ability to write engrossing & compelling dialogue matched with John Romita JR.'s amazing visuals makes for a fantastic read.
The only bad thing I have to say about this book is the publishing it's so big that it has a tendency to fall apart. Both a friend & I have bought this book & the spine has been very week. My recommendation is to buy the hardback version or the individual volumes.
I feel really out of step on this one... - By: Niall Mc Cann, 23 Apr 2006
... I mean, everybody seems to love it. It's got glowing reviews from every corner, the word of mouth i got on it was non-stop raving, & the concept, well, the concept does lend itself to greatness, doesn't it? Despite all this, however, i just don't like it.
In the first place, this book was sold to me as Wolverine vs. The Marvel Universe;in it, he fights The Fantastic Four, Elektra, Daredevil & The X-men (i'm not dignifying Captain "One-Punch" America's cameo as a fightin it's own right), which even if every one of those fights had been quirky, well-choreographed & memorablein themselves (which they weren't) would hardly have constituted an exhaustive list of the MU's brightest stars. Aside from which, the story smacks of one that's been toldin the MU before, far better (the fact that Elektra makes her appearance suggests to me that Millar's deliberately riffing on the fact that Elektra: Assassin dealt with a broadly similar story).
I know even as i'm saying this that it's unfair to compare this book to Elektra: Assassin, any more than it would be fair to compare the latest Bruckheimer actioner to a Coen Brothers or Gilliam film, & i really have nothing against a good, solid action story, but this book really didn't deliver for me. The Elektra fight was white-knuckle, the Fantastic Four was a great fun, nicely guaged merging of Wolvie's grittiness & the FF's light, but once those fights are out of the way, the action takes a back seat to the internal politics of Hydra & The Hand, & the ingenuity that those first clashes display is lostin a sea of "Wolvie breaks into hero's house. Wolvie fights hero. Fight stalemates. Status quo resumes."
Go read Elektra: Assassin. It's got a broadly similar story, but it's streets ahead of this. The fight scenes don't have the big names & they're fewer & farther between, but they're more ingenuitive & exciting & there's more meat on the bones than you'll get out of this.
Excellent concept.... - By: genejoke, 17 Mar 2006
....not so excellent delivery. Mark Millar is a very good writer, no doubt, but this is far from his finest work. He reuses ideasfrom his ultimate x-men run, & the story seems forced as if he couldn't quite make himself believein the story or the key character.
John Romita jrs art is very good, however Klaus jansens inking makes it look a little uglyin places.
So far so critical, so why four stars????
Bad mark millar work is still way above average for starters, & even uglyfied JRjr art is excellent. Then we have the simple but amazing concept, something marvel fans have always wanted to see. wolverine cut loose on the unsuspecting marvel universe. a must for all comic fans despite its flaws.
Wolverine at his best! - By: Joao Paulo Nunes, 27 Oct 2005
I've been a Marvel fan for more than 25 years & it's been a really long time since I've been so enthusiastic reading a story, specially a Wolverine story. I'm a X-Men fan but I usually don't buy any spin-offs, but when I knew John Romita Jr, (one of my favourite artists) was doing Wolverine I couldn't resist. Personnaly, I think this is the best Wolverine story since the Claremont & Miller mini-series from early 80s & that because of Millar script but most because of the magnificent Romita Jr. art. Buy it! You won't regret.
