Literally unbelieveable... - By: Dermot J. Cole, 10 Oct 2008
After quite enjoying Bone Yard & Body Politic - which at least tried to be a bit different, I bought this to read on a long flight. I literally haven't read a worse book. Other have commented on the throwaway use of things like 'knock out gas' - even the writer couldnt be bothered actually establishing a chemical compound. The 'twist' was obvious from thr first chapter, just ask yourself which character isnt given much background. The protagonist had a very handy set of friends, which was very convenient, one worked with demolition so could use explosives (and just happened to have a Glock pistol), one could hack into offshore banks from an internet cafe - althoughin fairness it took him over an hour, cos, you know, they've got so much security & that - one was an ex para, most had second homes to act as safe houses, etc. etc. As well as that, all of his acquaintances - not just friends, but ex employers - agreed to go on holiday to stay safe at his request, with no explanation from him.
With no exceptions, this is the worst book I have ever read, & I only finished it because it was either that or watch Iron Man for the third time - that & a sense of morbid curiosity. Truthfully, I'm no genius, & not that difficult to please, but this is poorly researched, cliche ridden, amateur & not even worth the £0.01 used.
Bloody good - By: Lizzie Redstone, 27 Aug 2008
I read this book when it first came out about a year ago & i found, like everyone else that it, as stated on the back,"isnt for the faint hearted". despite this warning however i read it & loved every single page of it. its an incredible page turner & the story grasped me from the very beggining to the very end, leaving me feeling depressed because there wasnt a sequel. it is a book that i could easily read again & find connections & story theads not noticed initially. by the end of the book i felt as though i knew Matt Wells personally & i found myself intrigued by his personallity & blood thirsty to "spend more time with him."
i am now reading the second bookin the series & amin no way dissapointed. this book promises to be even better that the first one.
read it. you will not regret it.
Heart racing, nail biting, wet yourself stuff. Loved it!!! - By: Lillie2374, 29 Mar 2008
I can't remember how I came across this book but from the first page, I was hooked. I took it on holiday with me & every available opportunity I got to read it, I did.
It was easy to read, fast, thrilling & it's the only book I've read that has made my heart thump hardin my chest & also caused me to stay up till 6am to finish it whilst shaking as I turned the page. (Didn't help that I was alonein the house..silly me!)
I won't go into the details of the book as the other reviews talk about the plotin quite alot of detail, so no need for me to, but regarding the writing it was gory enough to make me squirm but didn't over do it for the sake of shock value. There are no fancy words, intricate sentences, hard to decipher paragraphs, the author says what he has to say & it hits...hard! I have read many crime books & the problem I find with many of them is they try & be too clever & by the time you've managed to figure out what the hell the author was trying to say, you've lost what they were going on aboutin the first place. A good book drags youin & keeps you there, wanting more without frying your brain. After all, it's supposed to be entertaining, not an algebra lesson. This book is better than good, it's great. I have a few of Paul's earlier books but they don't compare to this one. All authors seem to have there 'star' book, this is it as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to reading more of his work, but slightly reluctant to for fear of dissappointment. Watch this space.
Dead Boring - By: Willis, 07 Nov 2007
I gave up waiting for this so called thriller to pick up pace. Everything was predictable, cliched & recycled. Some of the plot made me blush. Deadly dull.
Could be worse - By: Matt Peterson, 28 Sep 2007
I got this book based on the blurb on the back. It sounded like an interesting concept.
I started reading it & almost gave up after the first 50 pages but I persevered & I think I'm being rewarded now with a story that albeit not up to the standard of Rankin, Billingham et al but a good story all the same.
If you are looking for a book that has a realistic plot to it, do not buy this book. If you are looking for a bookin which there is murder & caracatured characters & the occasional moment when you find yourself thinking, "Was that really necessary?" then by all means buy this book.
It is enjoyable once you get into it but it gets a 4 due to the fact that it is "put downable" & it doesn't have the bite that other crime writers produce.
