The CDs come with the Pack! - By: David Stewart, 25 Oct 2006
I made the mistake of ordering the ordering the 5 CD pack with the Language Pack pt.2. In fact the Pack includes the CDs.
I haven't done the course yet but found the equivalent BBC Spanish course excellent.
The perfect pocket companion for francophones - By: , 29 Jan 2004
The whiff of garlic & russle of onion skins fairly drifts from the pages of this book. For all those looking for an insight into French cuisine & a handy pocket sized guide to German political history, this book will prove less than invaluable. I found some of my favorite anecdotes from the 20th century's sporting heroes & valuable hints for a novice attempting cross stitch for the first time. There are those who say this book offers nothing to beginners, but the very title should entice even those with just a grasp of English to turn the first page. A vertible tour de force that will not look out of place on your coffee table.
Moving on from basic French with French Experience 2 - By: dave.bexley@ntlworld.com, 28 Dec 2001
If you learned French at school & you are rusty, then The French Experience 1 will get you back on track. If, however you want to do more than just 'get by' on holiday, The French Experience 2 will repay your time & effort with this intermediate course.
I was impressed with the amount of interesting subject matter that was used as the learning base. Yes, of course you need to do exercises to practise something new but isn't it good that the subject is about French speaking parts of Switzerland, Africa & Canada, or about the Eurotunnel, French weddings or articles from French magazines. I particularly liked the 'clipping' about the French parents who left their 7year old child behind at a motorway service station - an interesting way to discuss different verb tenses whilst plotting if the same would be possible here! And to practise giving opinions, how about discussing the 'Front National' of Jean-Marie le Pen & 'La France' during the Vichy period - with the present inhabitants of Vichy! Both of these are coveredin Unit 9.
Each unit contains a different topic, exercises to increase comprehension & vocabulary, sections that highlight grammar & spoken language, & factual snippets about the French-speaking world. You can check your progress with the self-assessment tests at the end of every second unit & all the answers are at the back of the book, as are the scripts for the four accompanying tapes. These feature real-life conversations to increase the essential skills of listening & speaking to 'les Francais' & can be used away from the book, e.g.in the car, for extra practise. However, with judicious use of the scripts, the book could be used without the tapes.
A recommendation - yes, certainly. I am half way through The French Experience 2 using the books & the tapes, & I am enjoying it. There is no easy way to learn a language without investing time & effort, but this course has interesting enough content to make that investment stimulating & worthwhile.
