First in gripping series - By: J. Minogue, 08 Nov 2008
'I was arrestedin Eno's diner'.
The opening line of the opening bookin the series. It sets the mood. Jack is arrestedin small Georgia town called Margrave for a crime he didn't commit. He has drifted into town on a bit of a whim & as the only stranger he's a natural suspect for being the 'perp'. Jack says nothing during the arrest process - the first person narrative gives us his analysis of the situation. It's the first intimation we have that Reacher is bright & quick thinking, cool under pressure & a fearsome adversary. You'll be hooked by the end of chapter one.
Manicured Margrave is quickly contrasted with scenes inside the jail - violent scenes where Jack's formidable abilities become more evident. The story just keeps building from there - bringingin Jack's brother from the US Treasury & FBI agents & university professors.
After hearing Lee Child interviewed by Mark Lawson I got addicted to his thrillers - reading three or four whilst I was ill. I went back to this one to catch up on the beginning of the series. It's writtenin the first person so we hear Jack's voice. We get some of his army brat background & feeling of happiness to be free of army discipline.
The story line is so fast moving that it pretty much carries you over the improbabilitiesin the plot & characterisation. These books are great for the sick bed or beach.
The power of money is a strong themein the novel - a town isin its thrall. Money has made Margrave perfect but money smells & reduces & corrupts peoplein this novel. Jack Reacher travels lighterin every sense because it doesn't have power over him.

A gripping read - By: a fan, 10 Oct 2008
A fantastic thriller that keeps you hooked throughout.
I am often disappointed by a thriller's conclusion - but felt that this one kept you gripped all the way through.
I'm a little bit tornin my appreciation of the hero. He is a great character - but suprisingly violent with little conscience, which just does not seem to fit with the overall feel of the character. However, this can be forgiven as it keeps the story running forward at a rapid pace.
I was hooked from the start & found it to be a very enjoyable read.
If you like Michael Connelly books (Harry Bosch fans will appreciate the similar characteristicsin Jack Reacher), then you'll find an equally strong thrillerin this one.
I can't wait to read the nextin the Jack Reacher series.
Simply the best- you will drop everything down to read it. - By: annetortue, 24 Sep 2008
This book is simply one of my favourite book ever. I have recommend it many times & lend it to at least 3 people & my own copy is nowin tatters.
I found the plot absolutely fantastic. Lee Child's imagination is rich & he creates an excellent atmosphere. He really does small town evil like no- one else ( OK maybe Karin Slaughter). You can not not fallin love with Reacher, who once again uses brains & muscles to achieve what he wants & help those who need it. So many scenes are for me iconic, such as the onein the prison. the twistin the plot is so clever, even now, 2 years after reading it, I always think of it with a smile on my face. Pure delectation, absolute heaven.
I thoroughly, throughly recommend it: you will not regret it!
