I would read the sequel - By: Alison Ross, 02 Sep 2008
Deliciously gory & sexy. I liked the well-established supernatural world that Chance created & her exploration of ideas. The magic involved was unusual (in that I hadn't come across it quite like thatin a novel before) & the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end, though I don't think I would read it again. The story is a series of detailed, lengthy scenes that takes place over a fairly short space of time & I did find the sometimes slow pace of events irritating at times, but I would buy & read the sequel for more.
Fascinating... Enjoyable - By: M. Block, 27 Jul 2008
First book I have read by Karen Chance, & found it enjoyable.
I liked Cassie, at times she could be infuriating... but thats normal, charactors can't always do what you want them to do.
I liked the fact that we got loads more magical creatures like demons & mages, & can't wait to read the 2ndin this series.
I definately recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, vampire, werewolf type fiction.
Pretty rubbish read - By: BickyJ, 14 Jul 2008
Started slow & lost me... it got good onlyin the last 3 chapters. I was recommended this by Amazon 'cos I loved the Twilight series but the only thing this book hadin common with Twilight was the vampires.
Brilliant, fast paced - I got sucked in and enjoyed the ride - By: S. Hopgood, 16 Jun 2008
I must admit that I was a bit shell-shocked for the first third of the book. The author dumps you right into the thick of a very complex world & you have to go with it. So much so that I spent a lot of time thinking that the back story should have been made into a separate book. However, by the end of it I really missed the style & pace & couldn't wait to start the next two sequels.
Don't expect full resolutionin this book. It's more like a Janet Evanovitch 'Stephanie Plum' bookin it's treatment of the heroine & the main male characters. I've read the sequels now & I still couldn't tell you who Cassie is going to end up with (although she has had some great encounters with some of them!). The suspense of that alone means that I can't wait for more from Ms Chance.
It's vivid, funny & perplexing. There are some fantastic characters & ideas. I'm hooked.
Unappealing descriptions - By: Dark Clarissa, 19 Mar 2008
The premise behind the story was a little hard to swallow. A girl brought up by her parents' killer who happens to be a mob-boss-type vampire. She's now grown up & hates him & is trying to live a normal life, butin hiding from him. Cue the rest of the story. But unfortunately, by the time I'd got through the first couple of chapters I had started to not care. I ploughed on.
I personally I found Ms Chance's style of writing awkward & stilted. I could suspend belief for some of the plot lines (which I'm happy to do for fiction - lets face it - its about vampires) & I tried to get immersedin the world & the characters that the author created. But it was tough going.
I've given this book two stars instead of one, because I feel that part of my dislike of the book is due to my difficulty with Ms Chance's writing style. Her descriptions left me feeling distant from the environment & characters, rather than being drawn in. I have read other vampire/preternatural fiction & usually enjoy it immensely. I'm sorry that I didn't with this book.
